www.sfbbeachtrust.org - St Francis Bay Beach Trust ~ Saving Our BeachASR Ltd is a unique NZ company formed in 1998. The company has grown to have a worldwide reputation for innovation and R&D

Our style is “quality advice backed up by genuine understanding of marine systems”. We achieve this using a multi-disciplinary and highly technical approach.

We are best known internationally for our multi-purpose reefs, inland surfing pools and computer modeling. But this perception is only half true. Our consultants are involved in a wide range of studies including environmental assessments for the oil industry, estuaries and harbours, ports, sewerage outfalls, pollution dispersal, ecology, marine farming … to name just a few.

ASR’s Managing Director has 30 years of consulting and research experience and he is backed up by two PhD directors plus oceanographers, modelers, biologists and engineers on staff. With its regular sub-consultants, university and research partners, ASR will provide you with a very strong and unified team.St Francis Bay Beach Trust

Whatever your requirements are in marine consulting and research, ASR’s guarantee is that we can meet your needs in a fully professional way.

MULTI-PURPOSE REEFS

Multi-purpose (artificial surfing) reefs are an initiative of ASR Ltd for coastal protection and future prosperity:

  • Providing modern coastal protection methods which are less expensive, longer-lived and of benefit to communities and the economy

  • Developing eco-recreation opportunities which are beneficial to the lifestyle and health of communities

  • We promote reefs for beaches, when appropriate, and believe in them because ASR's world-wide leadership and research of multi-purpose reefs saves beaches and helps people.

  • We don't want poorly-designed and obtrusive hard construction burying our beaches. We don't approve of "land" protection being done falsely in the name of "beach" protection, and then callously destroying the beach.

  • So how do you protect the beach from erosive wave attack … break the waves on a reef offshore. Not rocket science, just common sense and a copy of nature's way.

Not surprisingly, the community, clients, scientists and the world press have been fully behind the concept of:

  • Moving beach protection offshore and underwater

  • Improving the outcomes of beach protection methods

  • Providing recreational opportunities through surfing, diving etc.

  • Assisting the environment through better ecology and

  • Reducing economic pressures through high benefit/cost ratios.

We are the leaders in artificial surfing reef technology and aim to stay there through provision of high quality service based on leading experience and research.

We now provide fully turnkey reef solutions, from recommendations through to completed reef construction. While some groups have construction or breakwater experience, no other company worldwide can offer any substantial experience in multi-purpose reef design and construction.

St Francis Reefs
The St Francis Bay Reefs are the first in Africa and will be using the ASR Technology in placing the reef bags on the sea bed and filling them from the land.  The pictures taken from the Mount Reef in New Zealand show what this type of operation could possibly look like.

The process will be that we will be dredging sand from the Kromme Estuary and pumping sand up the beach to fill the reef bags and renourish the beach as an ongoing part of the operations.  In addition, we will be resculpting the dunes and replanting them with suitable dune vegetation.  Approximate planned positions of the three refs are indicated on the graphic with a possible additional reef possibly being required.
