Massive Erosion on St Francis Beach

St Francis Bay Beach TrustThe recent large swells and storm events experienced in the Eastern Cape have resulted in massive erosion taking place on large stretches of the St Francis Beach.

The area worst affected is the stretch from the end of Ralph Road through to the Peter Crescent beach access which has been completed destroyed by the sea.  In addition, there has been significant erosion on the frontal dune from Aldabara Run through to the mouth of the Kromme Estuary.  It is anticipated that further damage will be experienced as with the Spring Solstice just ten days away it is likely that we still have additional severe weather events to come this season.

St Francis Bay Beach TrustShaw Mead from ASR comments that, " There's been a lot of southerly action this year, short period storms, and not as much of the usual SW swell action - a local forecaster was commenting on it for the J-Bay event, also, Bruce's has worked far more than usual.  As a result, higher than usual erosion.  Be keen to go along the beach and look at possible remediation when I am in SFB in October."

The Future Scenario

However, in looking to the medium to longer term the Beach Trust have now received approval in principal from the full Council of the Kouga Municipality for the beach project.  Our attorneys are currently drawing up a formal Agreement to submit to Council at their next meeting in order to obtain the necessary formal approval.

We are also holding discussions with the Development Bank of Southern St Francis Bay Beach TrustAfrica in order to obtain the required funds for the project.  At this stage the funding required is in the order of R 22.0 million which will be repaid through the raising of a “Special Development Levy” on all homeowners of St Francis.  This will however, exclude both Sea Vista and Cape St Francis.

The SFB Beach Trust have appointed SRK Consulting to complete the original EIA Report St Francis Bay Beach Trustwhich was started by the Kouga Municipality in 2002/3 but not completed. We anticipate that this will be completed by December, 2006 or January, 2007 at the latest. This is also the same time when the final design on the submerged reefs will be available from ASR Limited our New Zealand consultants.
