The
SFB Beach is a environmental
system which includes the
intertidal zone as well as
the dune system. Due to the
severe erosion currently
being experienced at St
Francis the dune system is
not carrying out the role a
healthy dune system needs to
play. This breaks the force
of the waves and allows the
wave energy to dissipate
naturally on the shore.
In addition, there are a
wide variety of large and
small living organisms that
live on the beach and it is
important to ensure that any
actions take account of
their continued well-being.
This will ensure that the
beach environment remains
healthy and self-sustaining.
The SFB Beach Trust believe
that the Beach Project needs
to be a fully integrated
effort to link the Estuary,
the Beach and the Reefs if
it is to succeed. In this
regard we include the report
produced by the SAB
Institute for Environmental
and Coastal Management at
NMMU (previously UPE) dated
July, 2002.
