The
Kromme River Estuary is an
eco-system all of its own.
This includes the plant life
both in the intertidal zone
as well as on the river
banks. In addition, a large
variety of birds visit the
Estuary on an on-going
basis. It is therefore,
important to be aware of the
effects of dredging and
pumping sand from the
Estuary to the beach in
order to ensure that as far
as possible the environment
is both protected and
upgraded.
We believe that with
sensitive environmental
management the Estuary can
be enhanced in order to meet
the diverse needs of the
community while at the same
time preserving the unique
environment for future
generations. In this regard
the SFB Beach Trust are
initiating the introduction
of a Management Plan for the
whole of the Kromme Estuary.
This will include the
influence that the Sand
River plays in the movement
of sand from the dunefield
through the Estuary to the
sea.
The SFB Beach Trust believe
that the Beach Project needs
to be a fully integrated
effort to link the Estuary,
the Beach and the Reefs if
it is to succeed. In this
regard we include the report
produced by the SAB
Institute for Environmental
and Coastal Management at
NMMU (previously UPE) dated
July, 2002.
