Why do we need to restore the beach at St Francis Bay?  Does it really matter that the beach is restored to its former pristine state?

The St Francis Bay Beach Trust as well as many other concerned residents  and developers believe that without a beach the whole economy of St Francis will contract.  This will result in a decline in property values as well as there being a significant loss of jobs in the local community.

We cannot allow our Village to undergo this negative change.  What are required are positive inputs from the whole SFB community in order to ensure that we achieve our shared vision and objectives in restoring one of our prime assets.

The St Francis Bay Beach Trust was formed early in 2006 in order to manage a fully integrated approach to rehabilitating the St Francis Bay Beach. The approach is unique for a project of this size in South Africa, as community funding was used in order to move the process forward.

This fully integrated process includes a number of distinct steps. These are:

  • The Investigative Phase ( completed July, 2006 )

  • Design and Costing ( underway to be completed December, 2006 )

  • Construction ( planned to commence early 2007 )

Urgent Beach Erosion Updates

Following the high tides recently experienced during the period of alignment of the Sun, Moon and Earth there has been further extensive erosion along the St Francis Beach. This is expected to continue for the next few days leading to the Equinox on 21 March, 2007.

In some cases there has been further damage to revetments and walkways as well as to unprotected dunes. Those who provided funding for the SFB Beach Trust can call 082 777 1519 for an update of the situation at their property.

St Francis Bay Beach Trust

This website has been designed in order to provide all St Francis Bay residents as well as other interested parties the opportunity to be fully informed on the process. In order to ensure that the information is easy to access we have split the project into its component parts being:

  • The Estuary

  • The Beach

  • The St Francis Reefs

  • Environmental Issues

Strategic Vision
The St Francis Bay Beach Trust have a fully integrated vision and approach to the Beach Project. We support the view that all the component parts interact and influence the whole system. There is therefore, no point in rehabilitating the beach without considering the dunes and dune vegetation. Equally, the issue of the Kromme River Estuary and its increasing siltation cannot be looked at in isolation from the removing of sand to renourish the beach.

In addition, St Francis Bay is a privileged upmarket holiday village which also includes a rapidly growing informal settlement in Sea Vista. As an integrated community it is important to offer job opportunities to those who see St Francis as an area of opportunity in respect of permanent employment.

The SFB Beach Trust see a real opportunity over time, once the beach rehabilitation is complete, to be able to recycle funds for other major sustainable development projects in the Greater St Francis area.  This we believe is a very important and necessary spin-off to the SFB Beach Project in order to build capacity in our wider community in Greater St Francis.

The Estuary
The Kromme River EstuaryThe Kromme Estuary is a unique habitat for a wide variety of life forms ranging from marine species to many types of bird species which use the environment as a breeding ground.  It is therefore, essential that any changes to this environment should be applied using a systems approach.  At the same time we need to ensure that as far as possible any proposed changes are seen to benefit all the creatures which inhabit this specific piece of our environment
